Students can now submit their abstracts to present at the 2017 Celebration of Student Academic Excellence!

The celebration will showcase poster presentations from students who have participated in research and creative works here at UB. Come join the UB community as we gather to recognize and celebrate the outstanding academic contributions of our students, faculty, and research mentors.

Collegiate Leaders in Environmental Health (CLEH) Summer Program

A summer environmental internship for undergraduate students is available at the National Center for Environmental Health and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. Interns will be placed in environmental health programs at NCEH/ATSDR at CDC’s Chamblee Campus.  Over the course of the summer, interns will be exposed to a broad overview of environmental public health issues at the federal level.

Interns will participate in a comprehensive program including environmental health project assignments, interaction with federal officials and scientists, and visits to important environmental health sites in and around Atlanta. Other activities include “brown-bag” lunches with CDC staff, as well as attending lectures from prominent environmental health leaders in the Atlanta area. In addition, interns will be able to attend the many seminars offered by CDC during the summer. For examples of past CLEH internship projects, please review at

SUNY SURC Undergraduate Research Conference

The SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) is a multidisciplinary spring semester event hosted each year by different SUNY institutions. It brings together undergraduate student researchers and faculty mentors across the SUNY system for activities, including sessions devoted to student presentations-oral, performance, artistic displays, and posters.

The State University of New York at Fredonia (SURC West) will co-host SUNY SURC this coming April. By bringing together students and faculty from across the state, SURC helps realize the synergistic power of the SUNY system.

Abstract submissions will be accepted through 17 February 2017, and students will be notified of the results on or before March 2017.

Registration for the conference will also open on 1 December 2016 and will continue until the conference date. Meantime, please continue to visit the website at  for additional information and updates as they become available.


Benjamin and David Scharps Memorial Award

The Scharps Legal Essay Competition is open to juniors and seniors (or underclassmen who have that status based on credit hours) at state-operated campuses who are interested in legal issues, or are interested in pursuing a career in the legal field. The topic of this year’s essay competition is Student Rights in College Athletics.

The Scharps Award is offered in accordance with a gift accepted by the State University of New York Board of Trustees under the will of Hannah S. Hirschhorn to establish the Benjamin and David Scharps Memorial Fund.

One award of $1,500 will be presented to the student who has written the best 2,000 word essay describing the role and relevance of law in dealing with a current legal issue. A second award of $1,000 will be presented to the runner-up.

Students must submit their essays and application cover sheets to the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships by 5:00pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2017.
